5.2.4 Classification Flashcards
Artificial classification
Only used observational features
Still used to make keys to easily identify and group organisms
Natural classification
Use common ancestors, structural features
Domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species
Binomial
Name used to identify animals - (capital) genus and (lowercase) species
DNA sequencing
Used is molecular phylogenetics
Compares sequence of DNA bases
-> more similar the sequence, closer related
Evolution
Change in inherited characteristics of a population over time, through process of natural selection
What is a seedbank?
A store of lots of seeds/ genetic material from lots of different species of plant
How do seedbanks help?
If plants become extinct in wild the stored seeds can be used to grow new plants
Conserve genetic variation
Therefore conserving Earth’s biodiversity
Taxa divisions
Don’t kids prefer chips over fresh green salad Domain kingdom phylum class order family genus species
Taxonomy
Study of principles of classification
Phylogeny
Study of evolutionary links
Phylogenies trees
Shows evolution and common ancestors
