What is the GMC?
the GMC is an independent for the registration and regulation of doctors
What does the GMC do?
- oversees UK medical education and training
- decides which doctors are qualified to work in this country
- sets the standards that doctors must meet in their professional practice
- takes action to address any shortfalls in standards of treatment that may put patients at risk or brings the medical profession into disrepute
What will happen when a serious concern is raised about a doctors behaviour or professional practice?
when a serious concern is raised about a doctors behaviour or professional practice the GMC will investigate the issue
What can the GMC do if a complaint is upheld and found to be true?
- what can they do under these circumstances?
they can restrict a doctor’s right to practice if a complaint is upheld and found to be true
- under these circumstances the GMC can restrict the areas of practice, insist that practice is under direct supervision, further training is given or in extreme circumstances they can be temporarily or permanently removed from the register - not allowing them to practice as a doctor
