B2.1. Supplying The Cell Flashcards
What are carrier proteins
Special proteins which span the width of the cells membrane. Binds to a SPECIFIC molecule and rotates to transport molecule into the cell.
Active process - uses energy
Active transport
An active process involving the transportation of substances AGAINST A CONCENTRATION GRADIENT
What do goblet cells in ciliates cells do
Produce sticky mucus to trap dirt, which the collated cells then brush away
Sperm Cell adaptations
Flagellum fro movement
Acrosome @ front with special digestive enzymes which penetrates the outer layer of the ovum
Lots mitochondria for lots of energy to help move
Fat cell adapriations
Small cytoplasm with Fat reservoir around it
RBC adaptation
BICONCAVE shape - higher SA : V ratio, speeding up diffusion of oxygen and other substances in and out
Hämoglobin - binds to oxygen to make oxyhemoglobin and then reverses by releasing oxygen a t muscles and other parts
No nucleus to maximise space for haemoglobin
Palisade cell adaption
Packed with chloroplast for lots of photosynthesis
Ear the surface of the leaf to maximise access to light
Regular shape for close packing increasing the amount of light absorbed
