B1.2 - What Happens In Cells Flashcards
DNA
Deoxyribose nuclei acid
Chromosome
Strand of DNA containing genss
How chromosomes in a human cell?
46 (23 pairs) - half from each parent
Genes
Short Sequence of bases within DNA which codes for a protein
Unit of inheritance.
How are the two strands of chromosomes together?
By bases (a, g, c, t)
Shape of DNA
Double helix
Nucleotides
Monomer unit found in DNA
made of organic base, ribose sugar and phosphate group
DNA is a polymer
True
Complementary base pairing
A - t
C - g
mRNA (messenger RNA)
A complimentary single strand to DNA. Used to carry genetic code out of nucleus for protein synthesis
Transcription
Process by which mRNA is formed
Steps of transcription:
- DNA unzips
- One of the DNA strands acts as a template
- complementary bases attach to the strand (u instead of t)
- mRNA detaches and the DNA zips up
- mRNA leaves nuclues into cytoplasm
why is mRNA made?
Because DNA is too large to leave the nucleus and it is important for a copy of genetic material to remain in the nucleus at all times.
What are proteins made of:
Amino acids
The order of nucleotides, affects order of amino acids and in turn affects the protein produced
True, stimmt
Keep going, study, look forward to stuff after exams
