B2 : The chemistry of food Flashcards
What three elements make up most parts of a cell
Carbohydrate’s, lipids and proteins
Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates help provide us with energy, all carbohydrates contain carbon, oxygen and hydrogen.
What is glucose
Glucose is a simple carbohydrate made up of a single carbohydrate molecule
What is sucrose
A simple carbohydrate made up of two carbohydrate molecules joined together
Lipids
Lipids are fats and oils, they are energy stores in our cells and combine with other molecules to form cell membranes
What are lipids made of
Carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, they are insoluble in water
Proteins
Polymers made up of amino acids joined together, there are 20 different amino acids that join to make new proteins. They are made up of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen
What are proteins used for
To build cells and enzymes
Give examples of complex carbohydrates
Starch, glycogen
