B1 : Cell division Flashcards
How much stages does the cell cycle have
3
What is the first stage of cell division
Cell growth (organelles inside the cell are copied) Copying of chromosomes
What happens in the second stage of cell division (mitosis)
One set of chromosomes is pulled to each end of the cell
Nucleus divides
What happens in the third stage of mitosis
Cytoplasm and cell membrane divide to form two identical cells
How much pairs of chromosomes are there
23 pairs (46 individual chromosomes)
What is mitosis needed for
Growth, repair and replacement of worn out cells
What is a chromosome
The structures found within a nucleus made of DNA
Are chromosomes normally in singles or pairs
Pairs
What is mitosis
A form of asexual reproduction and part of the cell cycle
What happens when cells differentiate
The specialize to suit their function
Why is the first stage of mitosis important
So that all of the genetic information is copied into the new cells that are made
What does identical mean
That the genetic information is the same as the original cell that is being replaced / repaired or grown
Why is it important that these cells are identical
So that they carry out the specific function that they are specialized for
