15
Q

Why do food chains usually stop at trophic level 4-5?

A

As you go up trophic levels, the energy from the producers get lost

16
Q

What do pyramids of biomass show?

A

The biomass of each trophic level in a food chain

17
Q

What does biomass mean?

A

The mass of living organisms

18
Q

In pyramids of biomass, as you go up, the bars gets smaller.

What does this mean?

A

The total mass of the organisms in each level are decreasing

19
Q

What is the 10% idea in pyramids of biomass?

A

Only 10% of the energy is passed on. And with that 10%, only 10% is passed on. This repeats

20
Q

Why does the 10% idea in pyramids of biomass exist?

A
  1. Organisms don’t normally eat every part of other organsims
  2. Indigestible body parts like teeth or scales aren’t used and just come out in faeces
  3. Most of the nutrients animals do absorb is used to release energy through respiration - not for growth
21
Q

How do you calculate the efficiency of biomass transfer?

A

((Biomass in the next level / biomass in previous leve)) x 100
