B102 Effective Listening Flashcards
What is the five step-process of listening?
Receiving, Attending, Understanding, Responding, Remembering
What does the basic communication process include?
A sender, a receiver, and a message.
The simple process of communication is the ability to encode and decode information and messages.
What is meant by “Receiving”?
Receiving is physically picking up the message - it is the hearing. While the starting point in the listening process, it is not the same as listening for understanding.
What is the difference between short-term and long-term memory? (5+3)
Short-term memory:
- Information is used immediately, usually within a few seconds
- Rapid forgetting rate
- Very susceptible to interruption
- Limited capacity
- Works better with simple concepts
Long-term memory:
- Recall information hours, days, or years later
- Often requires a stimulus to “jog” the memory
- Good listening habits will improve this memory over time
What are the three types of listening?
Informative, Critical, and Empathetic
How do your listening skills affect other forms of communication? (2)
Much like short-term and long-term memory, listening affects the way you respond in both writing and speaking. Your ability to block out distractions while reading greatly affects comprehension.
