What is meant by “Receiving”?

A

Receiving is physically picking up the message - it is the hearing. While the starting point in the listening process, it is not the same as listening for understanding.

Q

What is the difference between short-term and long-term memory? (5+3)

A

Short-term memory:
- Information is used immediately, usually within a few seconds
- Rapid forgetting rate
- Very susceptible to interruption
- Limited capacity
- Works better with simple concepts
Long-term memory:
- Recall information hours, days, or years later
- Often requires a stimulus to “jog” the memory
- Good listening habits will improve this memory over time

How do your listening skills affect other forms of communication? (2)

A

Much like short-term and long-term memory, listening affects the way you respond in both writing and speaking. Your ability to block out distractions while reading greatly affects comprehension.
