Q

what pathway allows AVNRT to occur?

A

dual pathway

Slow conduction of electrical pulses, short refractory period
+
Fast conduction of electrical pulses, long refractory period

Q

what happens in pt with dual pathway if premature atrial contraction occurs?

A

impulses travel down slow pathway but by the time they reach bottom of AV node, fast pathway ready to conduct again

circuit generated where impulses up fast and down slow, rapidly depolarising bundle of His + purkinje

resultant tachycardia that is not in SA node, but inside AV node (AVNRT)
