AVMA 2013 Euth Guidelines Flashcards
AWC for aquatic inverts
Adjunctive methods (second step) include 70% alcohol, 10% NBF, pithing, freezing, boiling.
Acceptable for aquatic inverts
Immersion in anesthetic soln (magnesium salts- non crustaceans, clove oil, eugenol, ethanol)
1st step in 2 step method
Acceptable for Amphibians
As appropriate by species-injected barbiturates, dissoc. agents and anesthetics as specified, topical buffered tricaine methanesulfonate or benzocaine hydrochloride
AWC for amphibians
As appropriate by species- inhaled anesthetics as specified, CO2, PCB or gun, BFT (anesthetized), rapid freezing
Acceptable for birds (see also poultry) +
cattle + equids +
rabbits
IV barb
AWC for birds (see also poultry)
Inhaled anesthetics, CO2, CO, N2, Ar, cervical dislocation (small birds and poultry), decapitation (small birds)
Acceptable for cats + dogs
IV barb, injected anesthetic overdoses, Tributame, T-61
AWC for cats + dogs
Alternative routes of administering barbiturates, inhaled anesthetic overdoses. CO, CO2, and gunshot are not recommended for routine use.
AWC for cattle + equids
Gun, PCB
Acceptable for finfish
In research: Immersion in quinaldine sulfate, buffered tricaine methanesulfonate, 2-phenoxyethanol, buffered benzocaine or benzocaine hydrochloride, rapid chilling 2-4C, 10min for adult, fry 4-7dpf 20min, for <3dpf, need to follow by sodium or calcium hypochlorite or other method
isoflurane, sevoflurane, injected pentobarbital
AWC for finfish
Research: Eugenol, isoeugenol, clove oil, CO2-saturated water, maceration, decapitation/cervical transaction/BFT followed by pithing
rapid chilling followed by adjunctive method for non- D. rerio and N. erebi
Acceptable for marine mammals
