Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
Can the ANS break into the conscious?
Yes (ex. telling the brain that bladder is full).
The ANS operates…
in the unconscious.
What are other names for the ANS?
Visceral, vegetative, idiotropic NS.
What are the two components of the ANS?
Parasympathetic and sympathetic.
What does the ANS regulate?
- Respiration
- Circulation
- Digestion
- Metabolism
- Temperature
- Water and electrolyte balance
- Reproduction
What is a difference between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems?
The second neuron in the sympathetic system is located close to the first neuron (ganglia are paravertebral or prevertebral - near spinal cord). The first axon is short and the second is long to reach effector organ.
What is the function of the ANS?
Co-ordinates organ activity and homeostasis.
When looking at the ANS in a dissection, what nerves are we looking at?
Visceral efferent
Where is the parasympathetic nervous system located?
In the cervical sacral regions of the spinal cord. (Brainstem and sacral regions)
Where is the second neuron in the parasympathetic nervous system?
Near or in the effector organ.
Where is the sympathetic nervous system found?
Has a thoracolumbar outflow, located within the spinal column.
Which parasympathetic ganglia are located in the medulla oblongata?
Facial (rostral), glossopharyngeal (middle), vagal.
Which parasympathetic ganglion innervates the ciliary and pupillary muscles?
Parasympathetic oculomotor nucleus.
