what is the definition of an attitude?
ideas charged with emotion (+ve and -ve) which is pre-disposes a class of action to a particular social situation
what are the characteristics of an attitude?
can be +ve or -v
generally stable and enduring
focused to a particular item or situation
attitudes are evaluative , subjective or belief
what did traiandis suggest the 3 components of attitudes are ?
cognitive (thoughts, beliefs)
Affective (emotions)
Behavioural (what you do)
what may be a consequence of negative attitudes?
stereotypes
discrimination
prejudice
how are negative attitudes formed?
bad experiences fear of failure fear of injury -ve role models low self- confidence lack of support (friends, family , peers) cultural beliefs low status of sport stereotypical image
how do you measure attitudes?

what are the strengths of a self report?
simple
quick
ease of interpretation
what are the limitations of a self report?
bias, socially accepted answers
not responding truthfully
attitude difficult to express in words

how to change attitudes ?
persuasion
cognitive dissonance
what does persuasion depend on?
the person doing the persuading (status of model)
the quality of the message (makes sense, believable)
the characteristics of who is being persuaded (intelligent enough to understand message)
the context of situation ( different situations, need different approaches)
what is cognitive dissonance ?
a mismatch in the triadic model
cause a dissonance (imbalance in the mind)
due to the introduction of new information affecting the cognitive or affective component
the only way to reduce this imbalance is to change their behaviour
