ATP and energy transfer Flashcards
ATP and energy transfer (definition)
(3 types of energy)
Is the capacity to perform work and can exist in chemical, potential and kinetic forms
Chemical energy
- Comes from the food we eat
Potential energy
- Stored in the body/tissues
Kinetic (movement) energy
- When we contract our muscles
Food we eat is stored as: (3 things)
(all of which…)
(when …)
- Amino acids
- Triglycerides
- Glycogen
All of which are ready to be used as fuel for energy production.
When metabolised they are converted in the compound of ATP
ATP is made up of
one molecule of adenosine and three phosphate molecules held together by high energy bonds
To extract the energy from ATP, an enzyme…
ATPase is released this stimulates the final high energy bond to be broken
This release of energy is known as an
exothermic reaction
This causes the release of energy for muscular contraction and leaves
adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and a single phosphate (P)
