What is atopic dermatitis?
Chronic superficial inflammation of the skin that is characterized by itching. Eczema.
Which areas of the body does atopic dermatitis typically affect?
Popliteal and cubital fossas and nape of the neck.
What are the three types of atopic dermatitis?
Fetal heat, damp-heat, and blood dryness.
When does fetal heat develop?
It is said to develop in utero but may appear from one month to two years of age.
Where does fetal heat appear?
On the cheeks or spread to the area around the chin and neck.
What is the tx principle for fetal heat?
Clear heat, dispel wind, and eliminate dampness.
What formulas are used for fetal heat?
Xiao feng san and dao chi san.
What do damp-heat lesions look like?
Typically appear in older children, lesions are flushed and swollen with erosion, exudation, and scabs.
What is the tx principle for damp-heat atopic dermatitis?
Clear heat and drain dampness to stop itching.
What is the formula used for damp-heat?
Long dan xie gan tang.
What does blood dryness atopic dermatitis look like?
Chronic stage in adults, skin is typically thick, coarse, and hard, may be dark red or brown with scales.
When is the itching worse?
At night.
What is the tx principle for blood dryness?
Nourish yin and blood and dispel wind to stop itching.
What is the formula used for blood dryness?
Dang gui yin zi.
What are some acupuncture points that can be used for atopic dermatitis?
GB31, SP10, sima points, UB62, GB20, UB12, 13, and 17.
