Assisted Repro Techniques Flashcards
Why use donor mares?
Old mares, mares are too valuable, mares are in training, mares are injured
Are cow or mare embryos more resistant to damage?
Cow
When to flush for embryos in the mare?
6-8 days after ovulation
Embryo grading scale? What does each mean?
1-5
1: excellent
2: good
3:fair
4:poor
5: underutilized or dead
Mares are flushed where? How many embryos gotten?
Uterine flush for 1-2 embryos
What is oocyte aspiration?
Recover an oocyte directly from the ovary
Why oocyte aspiration?
Uterus is too contaminated or damaged? Success depends on oocyte quality
Does superovulation work well in the mare?
No
A mature oocyte is aspirated from where and already in what phase?
From preovulatory follicle
Metaphase II
Immature oocyte come from where?
Smaller follicles
When getting a single follicle what technique can you use?
Flank aspiration
What is transvaginal ultrasound guided aspiration?
Probe inserted into vagina and ovary is moved caudally, needle goes into follicle to be aspirated, this happens about 6 times
What is IVF/
Oocyte and sperm placed into dish and sperm fertilizes oocyte
How IVF work well in the horse?
Is possible but not repeatable
What is ICSI?
Sperm injected right into mature oocyte
