Articulations and movements Flashcards
Definition of an articulation
a joint, where 2 bones come together
What are the classifications of joints
synarthrosis, amphiarthrosis, diarthrosis
what is a synarthrosis joint
no range of motion, fused bone, cartilage, fibrous connection
ex. teeth, pelvis, 1st rib
what is an amphiarthrosis joint
limited range of motion, slightly moveable, no muscle to move but not limited
ex. between tibia and fibula, pelvis
what is a diarthrosis joint
freely moveable joint, synovial
all synovial joints contain…
articular capsule, articular cartilages, synovial membrane and synovial fluid
accessory structures in synovial joints
meniscus, fat pad, bursa, ligaments - extracapsulr or intracapsular
what are the 3 components of joint stability
passive - bony congruency, ligaments and capsule
active - muscles that cross joint
what are the 3 types of movements
- linear - 2 surfaces slide past each other
- angular - body parts change angles between each other
- rotation - typically in transverse plane
examples of levers
1st class - seesaw, skull with traps on spine
2nd class - wheelbarrow, tippy toes
3rd class - catapult, biceps
what is a synergist
aids agonist
what is a fixator
prevents movement at one joint so another can move
what is an agonist
prime mover, produces particular moement
what is an antagonist
muscle opposing agonist, opposes movement
what are the 6 ways to name muscles +examples
- location - rectus abdominus
- origin/insertion - sternocleidomastoid
- fascicle orientation - rectus abdominus
- position - flexor digitorum superficialus
- structural - biceps brachii
- action - levitator scapulae
