Articulations- accessory structures Flashcards
Ligament
Band or sheet of dense regular fibrous tissue that connects structures; usually bones
Function: stabilize, strengthen, and reinforce most synovial joints
Bursa
Closed, fluid filled sac lined with a synovial membrane; usually found in areas subject to friction
Function: alleviate friction
Meniscus
Crescent-shaped fibrocartilage found in certain joints
Function: partially stabilize joint and act as cushions between articulate surfaces; continually change shape to conform to each movement
Tendon
Cord of dense regular connective tissue that connects muscle to bone
Function: move the bone when muscle contracts, help stabilize joint providing mechanical support, sometimes limiting range of motion
Tendon sheath
Elongated bursa, wraps around tendon where excessive friction occurs
Common in wrist and ankle
Alleviate friction
