What is the definition of arousal ?
Arousal refers to a state of general preparedness for action by the body
What are some physiological responses of the body to arousal when you are mentally aroused ?
Firstly , adrenal glands releases adrenaline into the bloodstream. Secondly , adrenaline is carried to the heart to other places . Thirdly ,adrenaline causes heart to beat faster , therefore breathing rate increases . Lastly , muscles tense in readiness for action
How to increase your arousal ?
increase rate and rhythm of breathing , focus on the task at hand and avoid being distracted by fatigue , warm up and practise the skills of the sport before a competition, listen to upbeat music before competition , visualise powerful forces , draw energy from the crowd
How to decrease arousal ?
breathe deeply and slowly from diaphragm , quietly repeat a keyword or phrase to yourself , focus on the process of performance rather than the results or outcome , shut out noise or distraction from the crowd , engage in progressive muscle relaxation , dictate your own pace and take your time between points
