Arousal Flashcards
Arousal
Energises state, a readiness to perform
Drive theory
Initial motivation caused increased drive, effort, success and repetition of same response
How does drive theory increase?
In a linear fashion
Formula for performance
P = f (d x h)
High Arousal =
Pick up less info and focus on the dominant response
Inverted u theory
Increased arousal improves performance but only to a moderate level, after which more arousal causes performance to suffer
Arousal In Personality
At low arousal = introverts perform best as already have high adrenaline
At high arousal = extroverts can tolerate extra adrenaline
Arousal in experience
At low arousal = novice performs better because they need to concentrate on lots of info.
At high arousal = experts are used to pressure and can operate on limited info.
Arousal on type/nature of task
At low arousal = fine and complex skills are performed better as require control and decision making.
At high arousal = gross and simple skills are performed best because they need less control and decision making
Catastrophe theory
Increased arousal improves performance to a point but an intense combination of somatic and cognitive anxieties causes a dramatic deterioration in performance.
Impacts of low arousal
Lack of focus and attention
Attentional narrowing
Failed to reach zone of optimal functioning
Impacts of over arousal
Violence
Break rules
Lack of concentration
Failed to reach zone of optimal zone functioning
Social loafing=
individuals loss of motivation in team player due to lack of performance
Ringelman effect
When a teams performance decreases with group size
Zone of optimal functioning
Area of controlled arousal and high level performance
