Avoidance behaviour - tries to avoid the competition
Achievement motivation characteristics (NACH)

Achievement motivation characteristics (NAF)
Need to avoid failure Avoid competition Takes easy option Gives up easily Dosent like evaluation and feedback
What determines NACH or NAF?
Approach behaviour depends on the interaction of personality and situation.
The need to achieve or avoid failure are situational specific.
Personality characteristics that are considered to determine NACH or NAF
Need to achieve/avoid failure Introvert/extrovert Confidence Innate or developed Aggression/arousal/anxiety
Situational characteristics that determine NACH or NAF
Probability of success
Incentive value
Familiar or unfamiliar environment
High risk = high reward
How to develop need to achieve ?
Use reinforcement (praise/rewards) Set goals (realistic and achievable, process or outcome goals) Allow success (encourage, motivate to improve using easy drills) Attribute success internally ( let player know success is due to them)
Achievement goal theory
Motivation and task persistence depend on the type of goals set and how success is measured
Task related goals :
Measure process of success against performers standards
Regardless of result, success can be achieve and confidence can be maintained.
Outcome related goals :
Dosent matter how the result is achieved as long as goal is achieved.
If performer succeeds pride and satisfaction is maintained.
If they fail to achieve, confidence and motivation can be lowered.
Attribute retraining
Changing the reasons given for success and failure
