What is arousal?
Physical and mental state of alertness/excitement varying from deep sleep to intense excitement.
What happens if your arousal levels are too low/too high?
Too low = unmotivated
Unfocused
Less alert
Tired
Too high = too much adrenaline
False start
Movement poorly controlled
Unfocused
What happens when your arousal increases?
Rise in heart rate/more adrenaline
Increase sweating
What does the arousal diagram show?
As arousal increases so does performance
Up to optimal level
If arousal increases further performance will decrease
What ways can you manage stress ?
Deep breathing
Concentrate on breathing
Positive self talk
Telling yourself you can do it
Mental rehearsal/visualisation
Imagery = take yourself to your happy place eg holiday
Mental rehearsal = run through technique
Visualisation = mental picture of performing skill before
