AR 40-8 purpose
Stipulates the minimum self-imposed temporary restrictions to be placed upon aircrew following exposure to certain physiological conditions in order to ensure optimal physiologic and psychological fitness in aircrew
Who has overall responsibility for temporary flying restrictions due to exogenous factors affecting aircrew efficiency?
The Surgeon General (TSG)
What does the term “aeromedical provider” refer to?
1) flight surgeon
2) aeromedical physician assistant

What does the aeromedical provider do?
Supervise and coordinate all medical treatment of all aircrew members for reasons of flight safety.
When will aircrew members consult an aeromedical provider?
Anytime a physical or psychological condition is suspected or known to be detrimental to the safe performance of flight duty
When they have participated in activities or received treatment for which flying restrictions may be appropriate
Including exposure to exogenous factors listed in AR 40-8 as well as any treatment or procedure performed by a non-aeromedical provider
Reasons to consult an aeromedical provider
1) ANY medical/denta procedure requiring use of medication after the treatment
2) ANY medical dental procedure requiring the use of any type of general, spinal, epidural, or regional anesthesia or sedation
3)treatment by mental health professionals
4) ANY chiropractic or osteopathic manipulative treatment
5) and treatment given by a homeopath, naturopath, herbalist, etc.
6)ANY emergency room orurgent care visits

Medical recommendation for flying or special operational Duty
Anesthesia
48 hours after general, spinal, or epidural
12 hours after local or regional
Alcohol
12 hours after last drink consumed and until no residual effects remain
Immunizations
12 hours following any immunizations
Chemical warfare agent stimulants
12 hours and no residual systemic effects
Blood or plasma donation
Aircrew will not donate more than twice a year
Blood donation: (20Occs or more) 72 hours
Plasma donation: 24 hours
( bone marrow-must see aeromedical provider)
Ocular medication use
24 hours (or as otherwise specified by aeromedical provided )

Prescribes Army policy, responsibilities, and rules for air traffic services, army airfields/heliports, and airspace operations.
NAVAIDS, flight activities, nonmilitary aircraft operations, and other related functions
