April 4, 2016 - Basic Nephro I Flashcards
1
Q
Normal GFR
A
Around 100
GFR is used to determine how well the kidneys are doing at getting rid of stuff.
2
Q
Exogenous Candidates for Measuring GFR
A
Inulin
I131 iothalamate
DTPA
3
Q
Creatinine
A
An endogenous marker for measuring solute clearance in the kidneys.
It is not perfect, but is very accurate and is a good predictor.
Ideally, you measure the creatinine in the blood and the urine, however there are formulations that can be used to estimate just from the serum that are also accurate.
4
Q
What Determines GFR?
A
- The amount of plasma
- The surface area of filtration
- The net ultrafiltration pressure
5
Q
Erythropoietin
A
Secreted by the kidneys in response to them detecting hypoxemia.
Will continue to produce erythropoietin until the kidney is perfused normally again.
