April 11, 2016 - Feedback Loops Flashcards
Number of Parathyroid Glands
4
Capital “R” in a Hormone
Usually stands for releasing and is usually secreted from the hypothalamus.
Anterior Pituitary Hormones
There are 6 hormones.
- Leutenizing Hormone (LH)
- Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
- Growth Hormone (GH)
- Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
- AdrenoCorticoTrophic Hormone (ACTH)
- Prolactin
Posterior Pituitary Hormones
Only two hormones
- Antidiuretic hormone (ADH)
- Oxytocin
LH and FSH
Are responsible for reproductive control
Growth Hormone
Growth and metabolism/hemodynamic effects
TSH
Responsible for growth, metabolism, and hemodynamic effects, and sodium concentration control.
ACTH
AdrenoCorticoTrophic Hormone
Responsible for growth, metabolism, hemodynamic effects, and sodium concentration control.
Prolactin
Lactation and labour.
Primary / Secondary / Tertiary
Primary is a problem with the gland or end-organ itself
Secondary is a pituitary problem
Tertiary is the hypothalamus
Collectively, secondary and tertiary can be known as a “central” problem.
Daily Flunctuations in Cortisol
Spikes very high in the morning
Drops very low at night
To test for cortisol deficiency, you want to check in the morning.
To test for cortisol excess, you want to check in the night.
