Reasons Against Circumcision
Pain during and after the procedure
Potential problems with bleeding, infection, cutting skin too short/long
Foreskin may protect the tip of the penis
Contraindications for Circumcision
Penile abnormalities
Bleeding disorder
Sick baby
Undescended Testicles
33% in premature infants
3% in full-term infants
1% at one year of age
Treatment is recommended as early as 6 months of age, and should be completed before the age of 2. Higher risk of testicular cancer.
Testicular Atrophy
“Vanishing testis”
The most common scenario with impalpable testis
Hypospadias
A congenital condition in males in which the opening of the urethra is on the underside (ventral) side of the penis.
Surgical correction between 6 and 18 months.
Dysfunctional Voiding
Can include behaviours like dancing, squatting, holding, and posturing and can lead to bladder sphincter dyssynergia.
Assessment includes ultrasound measurement of post-void residual volume.
Testicular Torsion
Most common in neonates.
One of the true urologic emergencies.
Testicular Tumor
Uncommon disease but makes up 1-2% of all pediatric solid tumors.
Incidence of childhood testicular tumors peaks around 2 years of age, and then rises again at puberty.
