approaches humanistic Flashcards
humanistic assumption
-idiographic= all different no point in trying to generalise
-free will= ultimate ability to choose and control behaviour
-holism= whole individual and their life should be looked at
-not a science= scientific approach too objective
draw diagram of hierarchy of needs
made by Maslow
pyramid shape
top - self actualisation
-esteem
-love/belonging
-safety
-physiological
hierarchy of needs
5 basic needs if the first is not met others can’t be fulfilled
-the more basic the need the more powerfully it is experiences
self actualisation
-achievement of our full potential
-ultimate feeling of well-being and satisfaction
-state of self-actualisation is not permanent
-if all 5 needs don’t remain an individual can move out of the state until all needs have been met
maslow updated hierarchy of needs
cognitive needs= knowledge upstanding curiosity need for meaning and predictability
aesthetic = appreciation and search for beauty balance form
transcendence needs= motivated by values beyond personal self
rogers focus on the self
how we perceive ourselves as a person
self concept= the self you feel you are
ideal self= the self you wish to be
real self= the person you actually are
if 3 selves match - congruent
to reach self actualisation important to be congruent and fully functioning
conditions of worth
-if a person receives unconditional positive regard loved and accepted the way they are = sense of worth
-conditional postive regard = develop conditions of worth these can be real or perceived

HOWEVER evaluate humanistic approach
research support
+ Hagerty found in 88 countries those with lower economic growth were classified by mallows hierarchy of needs to achieve lower more basic needs such as safety snd food TMB humanistic approach is unscientific shouldn’t be as heavily criticised as it doesn’t regard itself as a science and principles of this approach are shows to be testable.
evaluate humanistic approach
not science
- humanistic approach not regarded as a science because it lacks features of a science EG Rogers theory of the 3 selfs isn’t necassarily objective as data collected will be not be empirical TMB makes the humanist approach hard to be classed as valid and it is subject to interpretation
evaluate humanistic approach
cultural difference
- humanistic approach subject to cultural differnces eg UK individualist and Japan collectivist are different and therefore a collectivist culture would value group needs and values therefore it may be harder to achieve self-actualisation when dependant on a group whereas individualist countries may find it easier TMB limits its reliability to be extrapolated to the whole population regardless of cultural differences
