What is the primary organ of the Urinary system?
Kidneys (2), kidney bean-shaped, size of fist & responsible for filtering the blood & creating urine.

urine
What are the ureters?
2 smooth muscular tubes that transport urine from kidneys to bladder. Angled to prevent back flow of urine into the kidneys.
What is the bladder & where is it located?
Hollow, muscular organ that stores urine & located posterior to the pubic bone.
What component of the Urinary system is responsible for passing urine from the bladder to our external environment?
Urethra
T/F: Urethra is controlled by 2 sphincters; 1 internal & 1 external. Both are involuntarily controlled for life.
False; internal is involuntary, external is voluntary.
However, in infants & young children the voluntary control isn’t always fully developed yet, so it is more of a fully involuntary process.
What are the functions of the Urinary system?
- Filters fluids from blood to regulate fluid volume, blood pressure, electrolytes & PH level
- Eliminates liquid waste (excessive of minerals, vitamins, etc.) via excretion of urine
- Secretes hormones
How can bodywork be beneficial to the urinary system?
- abdominal massage can be beneficial
- general Swedish/circulatory massage that promotes blood flow can benefit the urinary system (blood filtration)
T/F: applying deep pressure over the kidneys is very beneficial for the urinary system
False! Light pressure recommended over the area near the kidneys & 12th ribs
