APPK 1.10 - Respiratory System Flashcards
Define: pneumo
lungs/air
Define: respiration
breathing
Define: rhino
nose
Define: bronch
trachea (windpipe)
Define: pulmon
lungs
What components make up the upper respiratory tract?
Nose, nasal cavity, pharynx; “throat”
What components make up the lower respiratory tract?
Larynx (“vocal cords”, epiglottis), trachea, bronchial tree (bronchioles, aveoli), lungs
What does the Epiglottis do?
It’s the switching mechanism for food & air (covers the entrance to the trachea when swallowing food)
What are cilia & where in the respiratory tract are they located?
Cillia = small hair-like projections of the Trachea that trap large particles & move them back up to expel them (externally or to the esophagus)
What are the smallest branches of the Brachial tree called? What is located at the end of them?
1) Bronchioles
2) Aveoli
_________ is shared by the respiratory system & digestive system!
Pharynx
________ is the part of the lungs where oxygen & carbon dioxide are exchanged
Aveoli
Define: pleura
the fluid-filled membrane that surrounds the lungs
What are some functions of sinuses? (3)
- lighten the weight of the skull
- sound resonating chambers
- lined w/ mucous membranes (more surface area to warm, filter & moisten inhaled air)
Why is it preferable to breath through the nose than the mouth?
Nose: more space w/ mucous membranes & blood vessels to filter, warm & moisten the air before it reaches the lungs.
Mouth: air moves DIRECTLY from external environment to pharynx; less time/space to be filtered, warmed & moistened also easier to ingest pathogens!
