APPK 1.11 - Digestive System Flashcards
Define: enter
intestine
Define: lip
fat
Define: hepa/hepato
liver
Define: gastr/gastro
stomach/gastrointestinal tract
What is another name for the gastrointestinal tract?
Alimentary tract
Define: mastication
Mechanical breakdown of food; “chewing”
T/F: both physical & chemical digestion begin in the mouth
True; physically via teeth & tongue, chemically via saliva
Define: bolus
chewed up food that has entered the pharynx
What is peristalsis & what is it’s function?
Peristalsis are wave-like contractions & relaxation of smooth muscle. This movement helps to move food through the digestive tract.
T/F: vomiting is reverse peristalsis
True
Where are rugae located?
Stomach
Define: chyme
a soupy mixture created from the bolus churning in the stomach, mixing w/ stomach acids & digestive enzymes.
Where in the alimentary tract does the majority of nutrient absorption happen?
Small intestine
T/F: Large intestine & colon are different parts of the digestive system.
False; they are the one & the same
What are the 4 parts of the LI?
Ascending colon, Transverse colon, Descending colon, Sigmoid colon
What is the relationship between Liver & Gall bladder?
Liver creates bile (breaks down big fat globules) & bile is stored in the Gall bladder
What is the function of the Pancreas in the digestive system?
Produce enzymes that break down proteins, fats & carbohydrates. Also produces hormones that regulate blood sugar
How many pairs of salivary glands do we have?
3
What are the 4 “blood organs” & what are their functions?
Kidneys = filter waste out of blood Liver = filter toxins Spleen = stores emergency blood (1L), big lymph node that breakdowns old/defective blood cells Pancreas = regulate blood sugar
Where in the gastrointestinal tract does the majority of water absorption?
Large intestine
Where in the gastrointestinal tract do the Pancreas & Liver secrete bile & enzymes?
Small intestine
What are the functions of the digestive system?
- Digest food to provide nutrients for cellular metabolism
- Eliminate solid waste
- Assists in regulating body temperature (heat is a byproduct of digestion/metabolism)
How is massage beneficial to the digestive system?
- Abdominal massage can stimulate peristalsis & elimination of waste
- Abdominal massage should be applied following the clockwise path of food through the LI
- Swedish circulatory massage that stimulates blood flow also stimulates nutrient absorption of the digestive tract & transport of nutrients to body cells
Celiac disease: Indicated or contraindicated? Cautions?
Indicated
Chron’s disease: Indicated or contraindicated? Cautions?
Indicated; contraindicated during flareups & caution to make adjustments to client position when necessary
Diverticular disease: Indicated or contraindicated? Cautions?
Indicated; unless fever is present
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): Indicated or contraindicated? Cautions?
Indicated
Hepatitis: Indicated or contraindicated? Cautions?
Indicated; contraindicated when acute, otherwise caution to provide gentle work only & careful to avoid contact w/ body fluids
