AP5 Flashcards
Blood consists of
approximately 55% plasma and 45% formed elements: erythrocytes (RBC), leukocytes (WBC), and platelets
all of the formed elements are produced from
stem cells in red bone marrow
Hemoglobin
erythrocyte modified for oxygen transport -> oxygen bound to pigmented protein
5 types of leukocytes can be distinguished by
size, appearance of the nucleus, staining properties, presence or absence of visible cytoplasmic granules
White blood cells are active in
phagocytosis (neutrophils/monocytes) and antibody formation (lymphocytes)
Function of blood
transports nutrients and oxygen to body cells and to carry away carbon dioxide and metabolic wastes
Plasma contains,
approx. 10% proteins, ions, nutrients, waste products, and hormones which are dissolved or suspended in water
in heart, Blood is received by ___ and sent to circulation by ____
atria; ventricles
Valve between atria and ventricle on right side
tricuspid
Valve between atria and ventricle on left side
bicuspid
Semilunar valves are found at
the entrances of the pulmonary trunk and the aorta
Coronary arteries supply
blood to the heart muscle (myocardium)
Blood drains from the myocardium
directly into the right atrium through the coronary sinus
Heart beat initiated by the
SinoAtrial node and transmitted along a conduction system through the myocardium; measure by ECG
Cardiac cycle
period from the end of one ventricular contraction to the end of the next ventricular contraction; systole then diastole
