A&P Flashcards
Histology
the study of tissues
Tissue
a group of cells that act together to perform specific functions
4 fundamental tissues
epithelial, connective, muscle, and nerve tissues
Epithelial cells
cover, line, and protect the body and its internal organs
Connective tissue
the framework of the body, providing support and structure for the organs
Nerve tissue
Composed of neurons and connective tissue cells that are referred to as neurolglia
Muscle tissues have the ability to
contract and shorten
Muscle tissue classified as
voluntary muscle (skeletal) or involuntary muscle (smooth and cardiac)
The cell
is the basic unit of life and the building block of tissues and organs
Mitosis
necessary for growth and repair; DNA is duplicated and distributed evenly to two daughter cells.
Meiosis
cell division that takes place in the gonads; chromosome number is reduced from 46 to 23 so sperm + egg =zygote w correct # of chromosomes
Largest organ of the body
skin
Two layers of the skin
epidermis (outermost protective layer of dead keratinized epithelial cells) and the dermis
Dermis rests on
the subcutaneous tissue that connects the skin to the superficial muscles
Layers of dermis from outer to inner layer
stratum corneum, stratum lucidum, stratum granulosum, stratum germinativum-> stratum basale (mitosis) and starum spinosum
