AP4 Flashcards
Endocrine system and the nervous system meet at the
hypothalamus and pituitary gland
The hypothalamus governs the
pituitary gland and is in turn controlled by feedback of hormones in the blood
Endocrine’s effects on body are
long lasting and widespread
Hormones
chemical messengers that control the growth, differentiation, and metabolism of specific target cells
Steroid hormones
enter the target cells and have a direct effect on the DNA of the nucleus; some Nonsteroid hormones are protein hormones
Protein hormones
remain at the cell surface and act through a second messager cAMP
Most hormones affect cell activity by
altering the rate of protein synthesis
The endocrine glands are grouped together as a system bc
the main function of each gland is the production of hormones
Pituitary gland
“master gland” attached to the hypothalamus by a stalk called the infundibulum
Pituitary gland; anterior lobe
adenohypophysis ; STH/GH, ACTH, TSH, FSH, LH
Pituitary gland Posterior Lobe
neurohypophysis; oxytocin, and ADH
Other important endocrine glands
thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, pancreas, gonads
