What are the problems with defining psychological abnormality?
Relative to society/cultural norms
Agreed definitions/consistency
People have different definitions of ‘normal’

What treatment do most anxiety disorders have in common?
Biological focus - neurotransmitters, scans, drugs e.g. SSRIs
Psychological focus - learning mechanisms of onset and maintenance, education, relaxation, CBT
What is a panic disorder?
Being in a situation that creates anxiety, start panicking which makes things worse
OVer breathing
Chest pains - creates more panic
What is PTSD?
Repeated re-living of traumatic event
Persistent efforts at avoidance of memories/emotional blunting
Hyper-arousal and survivor guilt
What is acute stress disorder?
Similar to PTSD - stressed after traumatic situation BUT recover within 24 hours
What is GAD?
Excessive and uncontrollable worry about future events
Tension and dread
Somatic symptoms
Co-occurs with other disorders, depression etc
What are ways of temporary anxiety reduction?
Excessive reassurance list making double checking refusing to delegate procrastination distraction
What are phobias?
Irrational fear of specific objects/situations
Desire to avoid object/situation - negatively reinforced by reduction in anxiety
What is agoraphobia?
Fear of crowded/enclosed places and open spaces
What is social anxiety disorder?
Social phobia - persistant fear of embarrassment and humiliation
Avoidance of social and public activities
