What are the therapeutic levels of Dilantin?
10-20 mcg/mL
A patient has blurred/double vision, nausea/vomiting, slurred speech, clumsiness, ataxia, confusion, and fatigue. What condition is causing this?
Dilantin toxicity
10-20 mcg/mL
Toxic levels = >20 mcg/mL
IV push 50 mg/minute

Adverse effects include gum/gingival hyperplasia, hirsutism, gynecomastia, skin rash, and SJS.

- severe inflammatory disease: fever, bullae of skin, ulcers on skin, mucous membranes, nose, eyes, and genitalia
- Agranulocytosis
- Ataxia
- Drowsiness
- “Hangover effect”
- Exfoliative dermatitis
- High potential for dependence

MOA:
- Enhances GABA
- Foci in the cortex, thalamus, and limbic areas
Uses:
- Acute seizure treatment
- Status epilepticus
Adverse Effects:
- Hypotension
- Tachycardia
- Thrombophlebitis (increase in blood clots)
