Antiseizure Agents Flashcards
Lasts only a few seconds, and causes a decrease in normal activity. There may be eyelid movement or jerks. Most often occurs in children, and can be misdiagnosed as daydreaming or ADD. May go unrecognized for some time.
Absence seizures (petit mal)
Individuals stumble and fall for no reason. Seizure lasts for a few seconds.
Atonic seizures (drop attacks)
This type of seizure causes loss of bowel/bladder control and apnea. Also has a postictal state.
Tonic-clonic seizures (grand mal)
This type of seizure may start in limited focus, and causes the person to possible hear, see, smell, and taste things that are not present. Twitching of the arms, legs, or face may be present. Causes intense emotions, but does not impair consciousness.
Simple partial seizure (focal)
State of acute prolonged seizure activity. This state is a medical emergency, and can cause permanent brain damage.
Status Epilepticus
Most common type of seizure that may be preceded by aura an aura (a perceptual disturbance experienced by some with migraines or seizures before either the headache or seizure begins. It often manifests as the perception of a strange light, an unpleasant smell, or confusing thoughts or experiences).
Tonic-clonic seizures (grand mal)
Causes somnolence or confusion with or without loss of consciousness. May have sensory, autonomic, or motor symptoms. Preceded by aura.
Complex partial seizures
Special epileptic syndromes
