What is malaria?
most common infection, spread by mosquito bite
Signs and symptoms of malaria related to destruction of RBC and hepatic toxicity
Antimalarial agents attack protozoa

Hepatotoxicity
What are contras of Chloroquine (Aralen)?
Antiprotozoal:Antimalarial medications
Known Allergy
Liver Disease or alcoholism
Pregnancy/Lactation
What are cautions of Chloroquine (Aralen)?
Genetic G6PD deficiency (glucose-6-phosphate-dehydronase) –
to occur in people from Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia, may experience a hemolytic crisis if they are taking the antimalarial agent chloroquine or primaquine.
This enzyme deficiency results from a mutation on the X-chromosome so the disease can present differently in female patients versus male patients.
What is metronidazole (Flagyl)?
Antiprotozoal
What are indications of metronidazole (Flagyl)?

Used for anaerobic organisms
Intra-abdominal and gynecologic infections
