Fungi exist in soil, plants, habitats
Found in human flora and environment
Candida albicans – mouth, GI, vaginal
Aspergillus – spores, buildings, water, plants
Cryptococcosis – spores, bird droppings
Pneumocystosis jirovecii – environment
Fungal infection called a mycosis
Immune system fails – opportunistic infection
Rigid cell wall, differs from bacteria

Given IV – central line
Tx duration: 4-12 weeks
What is fluconazole (Diflucan)?
Azole Antifungals
Less toxic, but may be less effective in severe infections
PO or IV – can dose once daily
What are adverse effects of fluconazole (Diflucan)?
Liver toxicity
HA; N/V/D
Skin rash
What are drug to drug interactions with fluconazole (Diflucan)?
May increase effects of phenytoin, warfarin, oral sulfonylureas, CCB, statins

What are indications of nystatin?
Antifungal
Oral, intestinal, vaginal candidiasis
How is nystatin available?
Antifungal
Liquid swish and swallow
Vaginal suppositories
What are adverse effects of nystatin?
N/V may occur
May be used concurrently with other anti-fungals
