Antilipemic Drugs Flashcards
What non-pharmacological means helps lower cholesterol and lipids?
Simply exercising
What are the normal Lipoproteins levels (HDL, LDL)
HDL is greater than 60
LDL should be lower than 100
What is a normal cholesterol level?
Less than 200
What is the use of Statins
Interfere with the synthesis of cholesterol and is the drug of choice to reduce LDL
What are the contraindications and adverse effects of Statins?
Contraindications=Monitor Hepatic Function, statins can cause liver failure
Adverse=Liver Failure, Rhabdomylosis (excess lactic acid in muscle), Flatulence, abdominal pain, cramps
How is Cholestyramine (bile acid sequestrants) used and indications
Reduces elevated serum cholesterol by binding bile acid to be excreted in feces
Not absorbed is excreted
What are adverse effects of Cholestyramine?
Increased bleeding time due to decreased Vitamin K
Vitamin A and E deficiencies
Can’t be taken within 2 hrs of other meds
What are the actions and indications Atorvastatin (HMG COA Inhibitor/Statin)?
Inhibits HMG-CoA reductase which decreases serum cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides
Make sure they adhere to diet
When is the best time to take Atorvastatin?
At bedtime
When liver is metabolizing lipids (night)
What drug-to-drug interactions should be aware of when taking Atorvastatin?
Digoxin and Warfarin-lower clotting
Vitamin K and estrogen
How does Ezetimbe (cholesterol absorption inhibitor) work?
It works on the brush border of the small intestine to inhibit cholesterol absorption.
What are cautions and adverse effects of Ezetimbe?
Can be used individually in pregnancy cases
Not typically used in elderly patients
muscle aches are common with statins
Niacin b3
Causes flushing
inhibits free fatty acid release from adipose tissue
