Antihypertensives Flashcards
What makes the definition for chronic systemic arterial hypertension?
A chronic elevation in arterial pressure above a normal value of 140/90
What determines a hypertensive urgency?
SBP >180
or
DBP >120
No end organ damage, lower the blood pressure slowly.
What makes up a hypertensive emergency?
Presence of acute end organ damage.
Reduce BP within minutes to hours.
What is resistant hypertension?
Blood pressure that is uncontrolled depsite having to use at least three antihypertensive medications.
What is the effect of the drug clonidine?
This drug works to reduce hypertension by increasing alpha 2 effects.
Causes less NE to be released into the cleft.
What is the drug alpha methyldopa used for?
Gestational hypertension and chronic hypertension in pregnancy
What is the best antihypertensive medication to use during pregnancy?
Alpha-methyl dopa!!!!!!
Stimulates alpha 2 receptors.
What does the drug Reserpine do?
Prevents the release of NO by depleting NE presynaptically..
When is reserpine used in hypertension?
Used with a thiazide diuretic most commonly to mitigate sodium and water retention.
How does the drug Guanethidine work?
Takes up storage space of NE after moving across NET1.
great for posteral hypertension.
