Angiotensin receptor blockers ARBS Flashcards
What is the suffix given to angiotensin receptor blockers?
“Sartans”.
Where are the two types of angiotensin receptors found?
AT1 receptors are in the vasculature and myocardial tissue, also in the brain, kidney, and adrenal glomerulosa cells which secrete aldosterone.
AT2 receptors are found in the adrenal medulla, kidney, and CNS and may play a role in vascular development.
What is the mechanism of action for the ARBs?
These bind directly to the AT2 receptors decreasing angiotensins effects of:
vasoconstriction
Aldosterone secretion
Sodium and water retention
What are the indications for ARB use?
The indication for these drugs are
First line or add on in uncomplicated hypertension.
First line therapy for :
Diabetes, Chronic kidney disease, coronary artery disease and left ventricular dysfunction.
Avoid use of ARBs in….
Pregnancy and bilateral renal stenosis!
The stenosed kidneys are dependent on the proximal efferent arteriole and will destroy the body if dilated.
