Antibiotics Flashcards
What is timentin?
Ticarcillin and clavulanic acid (a penicillin)
What type of bacterial infection is timentin indicated for?
Gram negatives - particularly Pseudomonas
What is the mechanism of action of gentamicin?
Interferes with protein synthesis but binding to 30S and 50S ribosomal subunits
Aminoglycoside
What is the major concern with gentamicin use?
Ototoxicity
Which bacteria is gentamicin used against?
Many gram negatives
Some Staph aureas
What is metronidazole used against?
Anaerobic bacteria and protozoa
What is the mechanism of action of metronidazole?
Reduced in anaerobic conditions
Interferes with DNA synthesis
What is tazocin?
Combination of piperacillin (penicillin) and tazobactam (beta-lactamase inhibitor)
Why might someone with an obstructive jaundice get a coagulopathy?
Vitamin K (fat soluble) malabsorption due fat absorption requiring bile
