Anti-asthma Drugs via Inhalation (week 5) Flashcards
What are the two main Respiratory Pharmacologic classes?
Anti-Inflammatory agents
Bronchodilators
What is the best route when administering Antiasthma drugs?
Inhalation
What are the advantages to administering anti asthma drugs via inhalation?
Delivery directly to site of action
Systemic effects minimized
Rapid relief of acute attacks
What are the 4 most common inhalation devices?
Metered-dose inhalers
Respimats
Dry-powder inhalers
Nebulizers
How many inhalations do you need to get a full dose with MDI’s?
1-2
How long do you wait between inhalations with MDI’s?
One minute
What do Respimates ensure?
greater delivery
Delivers fine mist
Does not use propellants
Extremely small particle size
Decreased drug deposited in mouth/oropharynx
Respimates
Dry micronized powder
Breath activated
Deliver more drug to lungs vs. MDI
Dry-Powder Inhalers (DPI)
Makes drug solution into a mist
Most seen with pediatrics
Nebulizer
What are the advantages of a Nebulizer?
Does not require coordinated inhalation from patient
Variety of attachments including masks for less cooperative patients
Can administer oxygen and nebulizer medication simultaneously for hypoxic pateints
Some meds are only Neb solutions
What are the disadvantages of a Nebulizer?
Potentially increased risk of aerosolization of pathogens
Longer dose delivery time
Some units require an outside power source
Some units require coppered oxygen air
