Where people are low weight due to limiting energy intake.
What are some compensatory compulsive behaviours associated with anorexia? (5)
- Excess exercise
- Self induced vomiting
- Abuse of laxatives
- Abuse of appetite suppressants
- Abuse of diuretics
What is the female to male ratio of having anorexia?
4:1
What is the diagnostic consideration for Anorexia?
BMI 17.5 or less (15% below ideal body weight)
What is the extra diagnostic consideration for postmenarchal women for anorexia?
For three cycles or more:
- Amenorrhoea
- Absence of Menstrual Cycle
What are the two potential outcomes of Anorexia Nervosa?
1) Resilience and Protective Factors override = Health
2) Perpetuating and Amplifying Factors override = Death
What is asked in the SCOFF questionnaire?
Sick - do you feel too full? Control - lost control? One stone - lost in a 3 month period? Fat - Feel fat? Food - does it dominate your life?
What talk therapies are available for patients with anorexia? (3)
- CBT
- MANTRA
- SSCM
What red flags do you look for with patients with anorexia? (6)
- Low body temp
- Muscle weakness (can’t stand)
- Abnormal liver function
- Very low WBC and Potassium
- Low HR / Signs of Heart Failure
- BMI < 14
