What is alcoholic hepatits?
An inflammatory condition of the liver caused by heavy alcohol consumption.
It can be aggravated by binge drinking.

What are some chronic complications of alcoholic hepatitis? (7)
- Jaundice
- Cirrhosis
- Liver Cancer
- Portal Hypertension
- Varices
- Malnutrition
- Brain Damage
What is the prognosis of alcoholic hepatitis? (3)
Pretty poor: 40% mortality (90% if severe)
- If they present with encephalopathy: 64% One Year mortality.
- If they present with deompensating liver disease: 70% Five Year mortality.
What are the symptoms of Alcoholic Hepatitis? (6)
- Ascites
- Jaundice
- Encephalopathy
- Dark urine

What LFTs are diagnostic indicators for Alcoholic Hepatitis? (3)
- Raised Bilirubin
- Gamma GT
- Alkaline Phosphate
How do we treat alcoholic hepatitis? (5)
- Treat alcohol withdrawal
- Protection against GI Bleed
- Steroids (if Glasgow Alcoholic Hepatitis Score > 9)
- Treat infection and encephalopathy
- Liver Transplant (if they stop drinking!)
What nutritional supplement can we give patients with alcoholic hepatitis?
Thiamine
What is the Glasgow Alcoholic Hepatitis Score?
Predicts mortality in patients with alcoholic hepatitis by lab results and age.
