Annelids II Flashcards
How do earthworms look for a mate?
periscope; they stick their head out of the ground to look for a mate
Are earthworms monoecious or dioecious?
monoecious; cross fertilization
How do earthworms reproduce?
-use their setae to anchor into one another to create a tight bond
-sperm is transported through the sperm duct and received in the seminal receptacle
-worms sperate
-band moves off with cilia to the anterior end of the worm, collecting things such as nutrients, sperm, & eggs
-slides off completely and forma cocoon
-direct development, a tiny earthworm is formed
How is Clitellum used in reproduction?
1) secretes a glue-like mucous to attach one worm to the other worm during mating
2) secretes the another music band that hardens into a chitin embryo forming incubator
What are leeches?
Specialized lineage of earthworm like creatures. their body if modified to be highly muscular with suckers and da proboscis that have teeth. they are a derived parasitic lineage of earthworms like ancestors.
How do leeches help in medical purposes?
Microsurgery: can help stimulate the flow of blood in severed extremities
What enzyme do leeches excrete? What does it do?
hydrodidin; lets blood flow freely preventing blood clots
What are synapomorphies of hirudinidae?
- highly muscularized
- no coeloms, canals filled with solid cells
- no internal septa (have to expand to fill with blood)
- two suckers: anterior and posterior
- cutting plates of teeth
- hydrodidin enzyme
- bacteria to digest the blood
How do leeches reproduce?
-monoecious; cross fertilization
-few species of leeches leave their eggs, some actually keep them on their bodies
-parental care which increases the chance of offspring to live
Why are siphuncula not annelids?
- tentacular crown used for filter feeding
- don’t have paired epidermal setae or true metamerites
