angular Motion (3.2) Flashcards
What is angular motion?
Movement of a body or part of a body in a circular path about an axis of rotation
What is an eccentric force?
A force applied outside the COM resulting in angular motion
What is torque?
A measure of the turning applied to a body
What are the principal axis of rotation?
An imaginary line that passes through the COM about which a body rotates
What is the longitudinal axis?
Runs from head to toe e.g. A flat spin on the ice
What is the transverse axis?
Runs from left to right through the COM e.g, somersault
What is the frontal axis?
Runs from front to back through the COM e.g. Cartwheel
3 key descriptors in angular motion
Angular velocity
Moment of inertia
Angular momentum
What is angular velocity
Rate of change in angular displacement ( rate of rotation)
Formula angular velocity
Angular displacement/time = rad/s
Moment of inertia formula
Sum of(mass x distribution of mass from axis of rotation ^2) Kgm^2
How does mass affect moment of inertia
Higher mass higher moment of inertia
Lower = good gymnasts
How does distribution of mass affect moment of inertia
Further mass is away from axis of rotation the higher moment of inertia, tucking in decreases moment of inertia
What is angular momentum
Quantity of angular motion possessed
Angular momentum
Moment of inertia X angular velocity
Kgm2rad/s
