Anesthesia drugs Flashcards
what induction agent can cause hallucinations if given alone
ketamine
what induction agent causes gagging/vomiting during induction/intubation
etomidate
is propofol considered mainly a depressant or a stimulant (in terms of heart and respiratory)
depresses the CO, vasodilation and respiratory depression
what drugs have dose dependent apnea and need to be given slowly
propofol and alfaxalone
what sedative is best used for standing equine procedures
detomadine
what sedative has analgesic effects
alpha 2 ags. xylazine, detomadine, and dex
what sedative is great for ruminants when used with a local block
diazepam or midazolam
what drug can cause priapism in horses.
acepromazine
what induction agent is heart safe, fairly safe with respiratory, and has muscle relaxation. synthetic steroid
alfaxalone
dose dependent analgesic and anesthetic, increased sympathetic stimulation, respiratory safe but makes their muscles stiff
ketamine
what drugs can you use if dog has cranial tumor
propofol, alfaxalone
best cardiac safe drugs for induction
etomidate then alfaxalone (brief tachycardia)
LA heart safe drug used in combo with other drugs as a drip
Guaifenesin
what drug do you add for standing procedures to increase analg or anesth a touch
ketamine
where does ketamine act
NMDA receptor
sedative that causes vasoconstriction and decrease HR
dexmetdetomadine
sedative that causes vasodilation and possibly reflex increase HR
Acepromazine
drug of choice to calm a sick, old, very young dog for xrays
benzos
what sedative do you not use in a cat
Benzos. it is not worth the risk of having then go crazy
how long does morphine last? why would we avoid it
3-4 hr, causes vomiting maybe mania
short acting opiate for mild pain
butorphanol
slow onset opiate but long lasting. needs 30mins to onboard
buprenorphine
our patient has renal disease. what do we need to consider for drug side effects
we dont want vasodilation or decrease in BP to kidneys. so no Acepromazine, careful with propofol
what opiate can be used to sedate old patients alone
butorphanol
preferred ruminant premed for GA
xylazine
drug that inhibits insulin so careful with diabetic patients
alpha 2 agonists
central muscle relaxant in large animal
guaifenesin
inhibits adrenal release of cortisol. not good for addisons patients
etomidate
