Anatomy Reproductive Male Flashcards
What are the structures of the male reproductive system?
What are there functions?
Gonads – produce gametes and hormones
Ducts – transport of gametes
Accessory glands and organs – fluid secretion
External genitalia - penis
What is the other name for gonads?
testicles
What is produced by the gonads
Produce sex hormones called androgens
like Testosterone.
Also produce gametes called spermatozoa
What is testosterone?
Testosterone, an anabolic steroid that promotes development of reproductive tissues and appearance of secondary sex characteristics
How do the gonads develop
Form inside body cavity next to kidneys
Drawn down and forward as body grows
Pass through abdominal musculature at 7 months gestation
Descend into scrotum by birth
What are the fuctions of the spermatic cord?
Connects abdominopelvic cavity to testes
Arteries, veins, lymphatics, nerves, ductus deferens
Passes through inguinal canal
Tunica vaginalis-
serous membrane lining scrotal cavity
What are the muscles of the testes? Their functions?
Dartos – smooth muscle that elevate the testes
Cremaster – skeletal muscle that pulls testes close to body
What are the seminiferous tubules?
Rete testes = collection of straight tubules
15-20 efferent ductules connect rete testes to the epididymis
What is the Epididymis
Epididymis = start of the male reproductive tract, consisting of head, body and tail;
What are the functions of epididymis
Stores sperm and promotes maturation
Monitors and adjusts seminiferous fluids
Recycles damaged sperm
Vas deferens = ductus deferens-
passes through inguinal canal, around bladder to prostate and seminal glands (storage of sperm)
Ejaculatory duct
connects prostate gland with urethra
Urethra
duct from urinary bladder to tip of penis
What are the accessory glands of the male reproductive system?
Seminal Glands (seminal vesicles):
Prostate Gland:
Bulbourethral Gland:
