Anatomy - Cerebellum Flashcards
What is the role of the cerebellum?
What happens if injury to cerebellum?
Posture, dynamic coordination, muscle synchronisation
Ataxia = disorganised muscle movements
Where do mossy fibres originate?
What is their function?
Spinal cord and brainstem nuclei
Innervate granular cells
Where do climbing fibres originate?
What is their function?
Olives
Input to purkinje cells
What are the 3 cerebellar nuclei?
Fastigial nuclei
Dentate nucleus
Interposed nuclei
What are the 3 layers of the cerebellar cortex?
Molecular
Purkinje
Granular
What are the 3 cerebellar functional pathways?
Cerebrocerebellum
Spinocerebellum
Vestibulocerebellum
What is the function of the vestibulocerebellum?
Receives input from vestibular system
Mediates posture and balance
What is the route of the medial vestibulospinal tract?
Synapses in cervical SC with muscles maintaining head position
What is the route of the lateral vestibulospinal tract?
Synapses on many levels maintaining balance and posture
What is the function of the cerebrocerebellum?
Planning and timing of movement and force
What is the route of the cerebrocerebellum tract?
From pontine nucleus
To cerebrocerebellum
To dentate nucleus
To cortex
What is the origin and route of the rubrospinal tract?
Origin = red nucleus
Descends laterally with corticospinal tract
Synapses in cervical SC
What is the function of the spinocerebellum?
Corodination of limb movement and gait
What is the route of the spinocerebellar tract?
From spinocerebellar tract
To cerebellar nuclei
What is the medial route of the reticulospinal tract?
And the lateral?
Synapses throughout SC
