Anatomical Terminology Flashcards
Anatomy is the study of what?
the structure of the body
Anatomy is divided into three categories what are they?
- developmental (changes throughout the lifespan)
- gross (visible to the eye)
- regional
- systemic
- surface - microscopic (too small to be seen)
What are the levels of structural organization? (in order)
- chemical level - non-living
- atoms
- molecules - cellular level - living
- organelles
- smooth muscles - tissue level
- a bunch of cells working together - organ level
- can be made up of two or more tissues - organ system level
- organs that work together - organism level
- human organism (you)
What are the planes of the body?
- sagittal
- median/ mid-sagittal
- frontal/coronal
- trasnverse
What is medial and lateral?
- medial is closer to you
- lateral is away from you
What is proximal and distal?
- proximal is closer to your brain (upper limbs)
- distal is away from your brain
(lower limbs)
What is anterior/ventral
front of your body
What is posterior/dorsal
back of the body
What is superior/cranial
closer to the top
What is inferior/caudal
closer to the bottom
What is superficial?
anything on the surface of the body
what is deep?
anything deeper than the surface
movements:
what does flexion do?
motion that decreases a joint angle
movements:
what does the extension do?
motion that increases a joint angle
What are the two types of flexions that the ankle performs?
- dorsiflex
- planter flexion
